BHS volleyball sweeps Pagosa Springs

Big block leads the Wolverines to a 3-0 victory on the road

Bayfield High School head coach Terene Foutz called it the best Bayfield-Pagosa Springs volleyball match in awhile.

Bayfield (11-2, 3-0 Intermountain League) won 3-0, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22.

“They played good,” Foutz said of the Pirates after Tuesday night’s match at Pagosa Springs. “Their ball control was good. It was a spirited match. They played strong defense; they were digging the ball. They were busy on the other side of the net.”

Maddi Foutz and Kirstie Hillyer combined for 26 kills, while Hillyer hit 16 at better than a .400 hitting percentage, and Foutz 10. The coach’s daughter also had 11 digs.

“Between the two of them, they did a lot of damage,” Foutz said.

Caitlin Phelps had six kills in 13 attempts and no errors.

“She had a great night,” coach Foutz said.

Phelps and Jessie Roukema helped BHS to a season-high nine blocks, too. They had five, while Hillyer had four.

“We haven’t seen that number in awhile,” coach Foutz said. “We’ve been needing that number to rise.”

BHS is home for its next two matches: Centauri at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Durango at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
