Hazardous waste to be collected Saturday

The 2014 Household Hazardous Waste Event will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

“This event provides residents with the opportunity to responsibly dispose of hazardous products,” said Mary Beth Miles, assistant to the city manager of Durango. “It’s important to keep (these materials) out of landfills and the local environment.”

Commercial collection will only happen from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday, also at the fairgrounds.

A fee for disposal will be in effect this year, ranging from $5 for a 5-gallon container or smaller and up to $120 for a full pick-up bed. Only cash and checks will be accepted.

Products being collected this year include automotive care items and fluids, cleaning products, expired medication, fluorescent bulbs, household batteries, insect/weed killer, mercury thermometers and thermostats, and non-latex paints and solvents.

This event happens every two years due to the expense of getting the company, Clean Harbors, to come to the city, said Miles. The last event was in 2012, where 500 participants attended, and a total of 30 tons of material was collected.

La Plata County and the city of Durango are sponsors of the event.
