A graveyard for goals

FLC plays its fourth consecutive scoreless draw at Dirks Field

Fort Lewis College is winning weekly Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors the hard way.

For the fourth consecutive game, the Skyhawks have pitched a shutout.

For the third consecutive game, the Skyhawks have played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer.

Caitlyn Espinosa, the RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week because of her role in each of those shutouts, made three saves in yet another scoreless draw Wednesday afternoon at Dirks Field. Adams State and the FLC women’s soccer team played to a 0-0 tie, the Skyhawks’ fourth draw this season and the seventh time this season they’ve gone without a goal.

FLC is 0-1-4 in overtimes this season, and that’s now 440 consecutive minutes of scoreless soccer at Dirks Field. FLC hasn’t scored at home since its season-opening 2-1 win over Texas Woman’s on Sept. 4. The shutout was Espinosa’s fourth this season; Kodie Johnson was in goal for the Skyhawks’ scoreless draw against Midwestern State on Sept. 6 at Dirks Field.

FLC outshot Adams State 22-14, including an 8-3 advantage on shots on goal. Adams State outshot FLC 6-3 in the two 10-minute overtimes.

Jessica Singleton led FLC with a game-high five shots, while FLC teammate Courtney Riley had four shots and a game-high three shots on goal. Durango High School alumna Brooke Milliet had four shots, two on goal, for FLC, and Carolyn Archer had a pair of shots.

Molly O’Connor, the Grizzlies’ goalkeeper, made eight saves to earn her clean sheet for Adams State, still winless in conference play (1-6-2, 0-3-2 RMAC).

FLC (2-3-4, 1-1-3 RMAC) next will play Colorado Christian at 11 a.m. Friday in Lakewood, then will have a week off before playing UC-Colorado Springs on Oct. 10 on the road.
