FLC needs more action at Ak-Chin

Skyhawks’ men’s golf in last place at the Arizona Division I tournament

It was obvious the Fort Lewis College men’s golf team was playing up a division Saturday.

The Skyhawks are in last place out of eight teams after two rounds of the University of Wyoming Southern Dunes Collegiate tournament.

FLC is 21-over par after rounds of 316 and 309 for a 625 total at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona.

Idaho leads the Division I tournament at 10-under after rounds of 285 and 281. Also competing in the event are California-Irvine, California-Santa Barbara, Nebraska, Northern Colorado, San Francisco and Wyoming, and Arizona State also has individuals in the field.

FLC is the only Division II team in the tournament.

“It’s clear that we have some work to do, but I’m sure we’ll play better (Sunday) once we get out of our own way,” FLC head coach Guy Begay said in a news release to The Durango Herald.

Joshua Woodworth was the low Skyhawk of the day Saturday after he shot rounds of 76 and 72. He currently will begin the final round in a four-way tie for 20th place, and he is 11 strokes back of leaders Mathias Schjoelberg of Arizona State and Jared du Toit of Idaho.

Mitch Donley is tied in 39th place after rounds of 80 and 77. Lucas Laudick and Dillon Washburn both shot two rounds of 80 and are tied in 45th, and Ryan Tanner scored an 87 and 86 to fall into last place of the 49 players.

The final round will begin at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

It is the second-to-last tournament of the fall for FLC, who will close out their fall season with Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament No. 2 on Oct. 13-14 at Eisenhower Golf Course in Colorado Springs.
