Skyhawks not as fast as a Roadrunner

Colorado Mesa and UC-Colorado Springs win Metro State’s home meet

Just two races before the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship, the Fort Lewis College cross country teams finished in the bottom fourth of the pack.

Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams competed Saturday at Metro State’s Roadrunner Invitational at Washington Park in Denver. The men’s team finished 11th our of 13 teams with 306 points, and the women were 12th out of 16 teams with 326 points.

The best finisher for FLC was Kelsi Lawrence in the women’s race. She finished the 3.73-mile race in 25 minutes, 8 seconds, which was good for 46th overall.

Julia Boyd Helm was 62nd in 25:37, Erin Renner was 77th in 26:19, Meghan Schroeder was 107th in 28:17, Rhea Gillespie came in at 28:51 in 113th, and Chelsey Beans-Polk rounded out the Skyhawks in 114th in 29:12.

UC-Colorado Springs won the women’s race with 60 points, and the Mountain Lions’ Heather Baters finished first out of 134 racers in 22:35.

The FLC men’s team was paced by Ryan Mott, who finished the 4.9-mile race in 28:34. That placed Mott 62nd out of 153 competitors.

John Booton (28:56), Zach Chenoweth (29:20), Jeremy Goetee (30:40), Dillon Wells (30:55) and Jacob Evangelista (30:57) rounded out the Skyhawks’ team.

Colorado Mesa won the men’s race with 42 points, and unattached runner Derrick Williams crossed the finish line first in 25:34.

FLC will compete Oct. 18 in the Fort Hays State Invitational in Hays, Kansas, before they will travel to Gunnison for the RMAC Championship on Nov. 8.
