Three sets and $7,000

Bayfield sweeps Durango in Pink Digs match

Bayfield High School swept Durango High School in sets and their home-and-home volleyball series this season.

BHS (13-2) beat DHS (10-7) 25-23, 25-20, 26-24 on Tuesday night at BHS, which raised just less than $7,000 for its annual Pink Digs for the Cure fundraiser.

Bayfield beat Durango 3-2 earlier this season.

“People could say sweep, but we were pushed every point,” Class 3A BHS head coach Terene Foutz said of Class 4A DHS.

“I think both BHS and DHS needed this match; both teams learned a lot.

“Durango played a great match,” Foutz said. “In the end, we were pushed, and I gotta hand it to our seniors; we kept our composure; we were clutch.”

BHS senior Kirstie Hillyer led the Wolverines with 13 kills. BHS senior Caitlin Phelps had seven kills. BHS senior setter Suzie Rhodes led the team with 27 assists.

“But really, it was an entire team effort – seniors Martina Romero, Jessie Roukema – that’s what it’s about,” Foutz said.

Durango statistics weren’t immediately available.

The next Pink Digs match is Telluride at Ignacio at 11 a.m. Saturday at the SunUte Community Center in Ignacio.
