Durango Swim Club a bunch of busy bees

Durango scored 20 first-place finishes at the seventh annual sprint-only Honeyville Invitational late September at the Durango Community Recreation Center. There were nine teams and 185 swimmers at the event.

The Aspen Speedos, with swimmers in every event over both days, won the competition Sept. 27-28 at the rec-center pool. Also competing were Cortez, Durango, Farmington, Grand Junction, Ignacio, Montrose, Pagosa Springs and Telluride.

“We are always pleased to host the first meet of the winter season for the Western Slope,” Durango Swim Club head coach Suzanne Schieltz said in an email to The Durango Herald. “It’s a fun, low-key way for the kids to get back into the swing of competition after a summer break.”

Haley Benjamin, 14, who competed in the Western Age Group Zone Meet in Seattle this summer, led the DSC with five first-place finishes: the 50-yard freestyle, the 200-yard freestyle, the 200-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley.

Abbey Bowman, 9, finished first in the 25 free.

Elli Earl, 16, finished first in the 50 breastroke.

Mira Joyner, 14, won the 50 backstroke, 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly.

Angela McManus, 10, won the 100 free, 100 and 200 breaststroke.

Ben Miller, 16, won the 50 and 100 free, the 100 butterfly and the 100 IM.

Anne Mummery, 16, won the 50 backstroke, 50 butterfly and 100 IM.

Also for DSC:

Steevie Delio, 13, finished third in the 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly.

Earl also finished third in the 100 IM.

Joci Earl, 14, finished second in the 100 IM and 50 breaststroke.

Sterling Gates, 14, finished second in the 50 breaststroke and third in the 100 butterfly.

Maggie Holcomb, 9, finished second in the 50 and 100 free.

Lacey Hoselton, 14, was third in the 100 back, 100 and 200 breaststroke and 50 free.

Iain McCourt, 14, finished second in the 200 free and third in the 200 breaststroke.

Hailee Prichard, 16, finished second in the 200 free and 50 back.

Quinn Schmidt, 11, finished second in the 200 back and third in the 200 breaststroke.

Carter Taylor, 10, finished second in the 25 breaststroke.

Mina Willemin, 12, was third in the 50 breaststroke.
