The first one is the hardest

Disregarding neutral sites, DHS finally collects a road win

Road wins have been tough to come by this season for the road-weary Durango Demons’ volleyball team.

Durango (11-7, 4-2 Southwestern League) picked up its first official road win of the season Friday night with a 3-1 victory against Grand Junction (3-12, 2-4 SWL).

Durango High School is 7-2 on neutral courts this year and 3-2 at home, but the road win Friday was its first in four tries.

“We haven’t won on the road this season, and it was good to have that feeling in someone else’s gym,” DHS head coach Colleen Keresey said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “We hope it continues (Saturday) against (Grand Junction) Central.”

It was a battle the Demons didn’t really expect Friday night against a Grand Junction team that has won just three games this season.

“Junction played a great game and took us by surprise,” Keresey said. “It would be good to see our kids step up and rise to the occasion.”

The Tigers won the second set, but DHS rallied together to make sure they wouldn’t get another.

Keresey said senior setter Logan Clark did a great job directing the offense, and she said sophomore outside hitter Alli Davis stepped up big at the net. She also said Sarah Lawton, Lauran Morrissey and Hailey Warren were tough to beat on the defensive back row.

“It came down to execution and putting the ball where they weren’t. Junction played a great game, and our girls had to battle,” Keresey said. “It just came down to passing well and finishing offensively.”

DHS will play at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Grand Junction Central (2-12, 0-7 SWL). It will be the Demons’ final road game before they will return home to finish the regular season with two home games against Grand Junction and Montrose.
