Demons go 3-for-3 in Round 1 of the YAFL playoffs

Still undefeated, even if by forfeit.

The sixth-grade Durango Demons won by forfeit in the first round of the Youth American Football League playoffs after Cortez opted not to play last weekend. Durango (9-0) will play Aztec at 3 p.m. Saturday in Farmington.

The fifth- and fourth-grade Demons picked up where the sixth-graders left off, with a pair of shutouts.

The fifth-grade Demons beat Farmington 32-0.

Bryson Kreeger recovered a fumble deep in Farmington territory early in the first quarter, and Jake Swift converted the turnover to points with an 8-yard touchdown run. Douglas Malcom passed to Jordan Stanley for the extra point and a 7-0 lead. From 1 yard out, Stanley scored on a quarterback sneak to give the Demons a 13-0 lead.

Durango led 20-0 at the half after Matt Pane’s interception set up Swift’s 1-yard touchdown run and Malcom’s extra point.

Swift, backed by an offensive line “doing their jobs,” the fifth-grade Demons’ coaching staff’s mantra all season long, scored from 35 and 8 yards out in the second half for his third and fourth touchdowns of the game to complete the Demons’ first-round rout in the playoffs.

On defense, Pane had two interceptions. Cole Matava, Kaden Steever and Taylen Yazzie all had sacks, and Cass Maloney and Kooper Mann were credited for big tackles by the coaching staff.

Durango will play Bloomfield at 9 a.m. Saturday in Farmington.

The fourth-grade Demons upset the top-seeded Montezuma Titans 14-0.

Jeric Baruch rushed for two touchdowns and an extra point, and Tagert Bardin added an extra point in the shutout.

On defense, AJ Folk had six tackles, and Beau Brunson, Andre Garcia and Nate Pinto all recovered fumbles.

Durango will play Bayfield at 3 p.m. Saturday in Aztec.
