A single goal prevails for FLC

Singleton nets game winner, and Espinosa records her 7th shutout

Caitlyn Espinosa recorded her seventh shutout of the season, and the Fort Lewis College women’s soccer team picked up a valuable road win.

A goal by freshman Jessica Singleton in the 81st minute was enough to give the FLC Skyhawks (5-4-5, 4-2-4 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) a 1-0 win at Colorado State University at Pueblo (5-6-2, 3-5-2 RMAC).

“This was a tough game (Sunday),” FLC head coach Jimmy Hall said in a news release.

The Skyhawks again struggled to finish on solid opportunities in front of their opponent’s goal, but the ball finally found the back of the net on Singleton’s second game-winning goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Haleigh Macomb, and Singleton got her head on the ball to direct it into the goal.

“There was a huge swing at the end of the game, and the girls (kept) grinding to change it back and win. I’m very proud of their mental strength,” Hall said.

Espinosa made five saves in the match to improve to 5-4-4 between the posts this season. She set the FLC single-season record of 13 shutouts a season ago and is more than halfway there again with four games remaining in the regular season before the RMAC Tournament will begin No. 5.

CSU-Pueblo outshot FLC 13-11 in the game, and both teams had five shots on frame.

FLC will remain on the road for its next game, a 7 p.m. match Friday night at Metro State (10-1-2, 7-0-2 RMAC) at Auraria Field.

The Skyhawks currently are in fourth place in the conference behind Colorado Mines (11-1-2, 8-1-1), Regis (10-3-1, 8-2) and Metro State. Colorado Mines and Regis already have clinched RMAC Tournament bids.
