Small gas leak closes county road near airport

A small leak was detected in a 30-inch natural-gas line Monday afternoon in the 3600 block of County Road 309A, near the Durango-La Plata County Airport.

The leak was reported about 4 p.m. by Williams, a natural gas company in the Four Corners area. The rupture occurred at an underground crossing about 4,000 feet north of County Road 310, south of the airport, according to a news release issued by the county.

Williams workers performed an emergency shutdown.

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to provide public safety and assistance. Heavy equipment was dispatched, and further investigation and repairs have begun.

County Road 309A in the 3600 block will be closed when excavation begins under the road. Crews planned to work through the night and during the day Tuesday to make necessary repairs.

Motorists using County Road 309A should seek alternative routes while the closure is in effect. Residents wishing to access the airport cannot do so from County Road 310/318 and must do so by using Colorado Highway 172.
