Durango No. 9 on list

City ranks ninth for retirement

Not only is Durango a top city for outdoor recreation, history, Western flavor and affordable skiing, now it’s been ranked the No. 9 place in Colorado for retirement.

CreditDonkey analyzed towns across the state on five key factors:

Percentage of population older than 65.

Percentage of multi-unit housing.

Median household income for those 65 and older.

Number of art, entertainment and recreation establishments per capita.

Number of health-care and social assistance establishments per capita.

Durango ranked second in the towns analyzed on the health-care and entertainment establishments per capita measurement and was one of the higher-ranked towns for seniors’ median income.

Greenwood Village came in at No. 1, followed by Wheat Ridge, Littleton, Steamboat Springs, Lone Tree, Lakewood, Montrose and Boulder. Durango edged out Grand Junction, which came in at No. 10.

Because the study looked at only gross numbers of health-care establishments and didn’t take into account the shortage of general practitioners, the health-care ranking is a tad deceptive.

Charles Tran of CreditDonkey said the organization has not ranked the states for their attractiveness as places to retire, but Colorado was ranked No. 2 by BankRate and No. 6 by Forbes.

“Hopefully, that will help give your readers some perspective on why Colorado is such an amazing place to grow old,” he said.
