6th-grade Demons will play for another YAFL title

And then there was one: the sixth-grade Durango Demons.

Durango beat Aztec 41-8 to advance to their third Youth American Football League title shot in four years.

The fifth-grade Durango Demons lost 8-0 to defending-champion Bloomfield, while the fourth-grade Durango Demons lost to the Aztec Apes.

The sixth-grade Demons scored first on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Woolverton to Gage Mestas, with Haezen Mestas’ extra point giving the Demons a 7-0 lead. Haezen Mestas scored on a 3-yard touchdown run, Woolverton added the extra point, and the Demons led 14-0 in the first quarter.

Haezen Mestas added a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and Woolverton hit Kyle Reimers for the extra point and a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.

Aztec answered for a 21-8 game at the half.

Gage Mestas rushed for a 16-yard touchdown to start the second half, and Cal Walsh rushed for the extra point and a 28-8 lead.

Woolverton hit Walsh from 7 yards out, Alex Pavon added the extra point, and Durango led Aztec 35-8 in the fourth quarter.

Solomon Gable capped the Demons’ scoring with a 67-yard fumble return for a touchdown and the final margin of victory.

Thomas Barnes, Reimers and Walsh paced the Demons’ defense with 10 tackles each. Ty Martinez and Woolverton added eight tackles each.

Durango will play Pagosa Springs at 1 p.m. Saturday in Farmington in the sixth-grade Demons’ final YAFL game of their careers before embarking on middle school football.
