Firefighters respond to garage fire

Flames stopped short of house
STEVE LEWIS/Durango Herald

The Durango Fire Protection District responded to a fire Thursday afternoon on County Road 219 near where it intersects with U.S. Highway 550 near mile marker 13, south of Durango. The Los Pinos Fire Protection District assisted with the call.

A shed and a garage were lost Thursday to a fire at 12995 U.S. Highway 550.

The cause of the fire, which sent Durango Fire Protection District crews scrambling at 12:53 p.m., is under investigation, said Fire Marshal Karola Hanks.

Hanks said the property owner was exterminating rodents at the time, injecting oxygen and propane into ground and igniting the mixture.

“We can’t say that was the cause,” Hanks said. “It depends on what the investigator finds.”

The property owner ruled out an insurance claim because the contents of the buildings is negligible, Hanks said.

Two engines, two tankers and a medical unit responded to the scene, Hanks said. Upper Pine and Los Pinos fire protection districts arrived per mutual-aid agreements, she said.

Crews stopped the fire, which spread from the shed to the garage, before flames reached a single-family residence off County Road 219 about 50 feet away.

Crews said flames had been knocked down by 1:30 p.m.
