Updated ballot tallies released

About 20% returned in La Plata County
Parker

As the countdown begins for the final 10 days until Election Day 2014, a new tally of ballots returned to date has been released by Colorado’s secretary of state.

Only about 20 percent of La Plata County’s ballots had been returned as of Thursday night.

“I sent out about 33,000 ballots,” La Plata County Clerk Tiffany Lee Parker said. “That still includes inactive voters because we’re required to send to them as well; so, the numbers are always a little off on returns.”

Parker sent 10,215 ballots to registered Democrats, 10,410 to Republicans and 11,632 to unaffiliated voters, she said. The numbers do not remain firm, as people can now register up to and including on Election Day with photo identification.

The pace of returns is increasing, however. As of Tuesday, only 3,213 ballots had been returned; so, with 6,298 in by Thursday, returns have almost doubled in just two days.

On the state level, registered Republicans are getting their ballots out in commanding numbers. Democrats have returned 164,443 ballots, Republicans 226,923, and unaffiliated voters come in at 121,812.

Parker recommends that people mail their ballots in no later than Wednesday, so there is time for them to go to Albuquerque or Denver (depending on where you live) and return. Her office must receive them no later than 7 p.m. Nov. 4.

Voter Service and Polling Centers will be open from 8 a.m. to noon today at the Clerk & Recorder’s Office and Bayfield Town Halls, where 24-hour ballot drop-off boxes are also located.
