Public library remodels teen section

Upgrades will allow students to plug in, recharge, tune out

Six years after Durango Public Library opened, the teen section is getting a face-lift.

The booths are gone, and a new computer counter with electrical outlets, using repurposed table tops and furniture, is being installed.

“The booths were well-loved,” said Sandy Irwin, assistant director of the library. “They had a nice short life, and now it’s time to switch to something else.”

The money for the remodel, which is estimated to cost about $6,500, Irwin said, is coming from a fund the library has for projects like this. The library also replaced the original sliding front doors with money from the fund.

The furnishings will include tables with outlets in the middle as well as a lounge chair with an outlet.

“This will be more practical,” said Durango Friends of the Library President Nancy Peake, “and this generation wants to be able to recharge their devices.”

The remodel is also being completed with sweat equity from the library – Hal Simpson, who’s on the library staff, is doing the work.

“We’re hoping that additional funds will be coming from the Library Advisory Board next year for additional furniture for the teen section,” Irwin said.
