No. 10 Colorado Mesa shuts out FLC

Skyhawks outshoot the Mavericks 18-6 but can’t find the net

Colorado Mesa struck first under the Friday night lights at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction.

Roy Abergil converted Nestor Escobar’s corner kick to a goal with a header on target in the 18th minute of the first half to take a 1-0 lead over the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team.

The Mavericks held that advantage at halftime, and the 10th-ranked Mavericks (12-2-1, 10-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) held that advantage after 90 minutes for a 1-0 victory.

Maik Brandt led FLC with six shots and three on goal but nothing to show for it. FLC outshot Colorado Mesa 18-6; the shots on goal were even at eight apiece. Colorado Mesa was booked for six yellow cards, while FLC had one. There were 23 fouls in the match; FLC had 12 to the Mavericks’ 11. Sean Foster of Colorado Mesa received a red card in the victory.

Brandyn Bumpas made eight saves in the win.

FLC (8-7, 6-5 RMAC) will play at Metro State at 1 p.m. Sunday in Denver.
