BHS football scores a passionate victory

Facing a must-win situation, Wolverines beat Pagosa Springs

BAYFIELD – Head coach Gary Heide and the Bayfield High School coaching staff noticed how fired up the Wolverines were before Friday’s regular-season finale against Pagosa Springs.

The Wolverines carried that passion through a 29-2 win against the Pirates on Friday at Wolverine Country Stadium on senior night.

BHS (5-4, 3-2 Western Slope South League) came out of the gate firing off the ball, and junior Brody McGhehey put the Wolverines up 7-0 with a 12-yard scamper with 7 minutes, 42 seconds left in the first quarter.

BHS senior Anthony Chamblee scored on a 20-yard run just more than four minutes later.

“We were pumped up as soon as we got in the locker room, as soon as we woke up (Friday),” said Chamblee, son of Aaron and Jennifer Chamblee. “We knew this was a do-or-die situation, and we were ready for it.”

Pagosa Springs (3-6, 2-3 WSL) sacked BHS quarterback Kelton McCoy at the end of the third quarter to put a safety on the board, but the Pirates’ offense couldn’t muster any scores of their own.

Taed Heydinger and Colter McMenimen both ended Pirates drives with interceptions in the redzone.

“The defense really rose to the occasion (Friday night),” BHS head coach Gary Heide said. “Turnovers give a team energy.”

They also sap energy away from the other team.

“You gotta have the ball to score,” Pagosa Springs’ head coach Scott Spoede said. “We would make some drives, and we would do stuff, either penalties or not convert, throw interceptions, to stop a good drive. We just couldn’t put it all together in one drive.”

BHS forced three turnovers and made five sacks in the game.

Bayfield’s running game remained strong all evening.

Three different Wolverines running backs eclipsed the 50-yard mark in the game, led by McGhehey’s 83.

“Early on in the season, and last year, Zane Phelps was our workhorse. It’s just showing that McGhehey, McMenimen and Chamblee have steped up to take the heat off,” Heide said. “They’ve run hard, they’ve run inside, they’ve run outside. It’s really great to have those runners taking the heat off Zane Phelps.”

Phelps wasn’t an afterthought, though. He scored two touchdowns on the ground, including one with 1:31 left that sealed the game.

It also could have sealed a playoff berth for the Wolverines.

The Colorado High School Activities Association will announce its postseason field Sunday, and Bayfield’s win only will help its wild-card standing.

“The numbers turn out in our favor, I believe, this year,” Heide said. “We’ll play somebody that’s really tough, probably undefeated or only lost one game. I know that this team has the talent to play with anyone in the state, and we want to be able to prove that.”
