DHS matches Air Academy on offense

Demons ride Mayberry and Spies on the ground to grind out a victory

Fans of defense would not have enjoyed Friday’s game.

Fans of high-scoring offenses were in for a treat, for one half, at least.

The Durango High School football team (4-5, 2-2 Pikes Peak League) hosted the high-flying Air Academy Kadets (2-7, 0-4 PPL) in the Demons’ final home game of the season. Those in attendance were in for a treat, as the two teams combined for 83 points in a 47-36 win for the Durango Demons.

“Getting a win like that is always nice,” DHS junior running back Lawrence Mayberry said. “We definitely worked hard in practice last week.”

The game started at a record-setting pace, as Air Academy took a 21-20 lead into the second quarter. Air Academy senior quarterback Adam Brown threw for 308 yards and four touchdowns in the first half, putting him well on the way to breaking his own state record for most passing yards in a single game of 589 set earlier this season, but the Demons’ defense buckled down in the second half to prevent the record from falling again.

DHS was able to use a well-balanced rushing attack between Mayberry and senior Steele Spies to control the clock more in the second half.

Mayberry finished with 229 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries, and Spies had an even 100 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries.

“That was all our o-line. They really stepped up this week, practiced hard, and they made some awesome holes for us,” said Spies, son of Denise Spies and J.R. Spies. “That’s kind of the reason we won and got all those points.”

The hard-hitting Durango defense knocked Brown out of the game late in the third quarter. After absorbing multiple big hits, Brown couldn’t continue, and he finished the game 22-of-45 passing for 358 yards, four touchdowns and one interception.

“We definitely had to step up,” Spies said of the Demons’ defense. “That first half was kind of a mess, but we came through, fixed some stuff up in the locker room and just came through.”

DHS quarterback Terrence Trujillo was accurate early, going 11-of-14 passing for 140 yards and touchdown passes to Jalon Malone and Justin Marcum in the first half.

Marcum’s touchdown reception came in the back corner of the endzone from 25 yards out, with one foot in bounds for the score. Malone got wide open in the endzone, and Trujillo hit him from 15 yards out for his score.

Trujillo finished the game 15-of-22 passing for 182 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Both teams fumbled once in the first half, and the Demons forced two rare Air Academy punts along with one turnover on downs. Dayne Rowley recovered Air Academy’s fumble for DHS, and Trujillo committed the Demons’ turnover after fumbling trying to lateral the ball on a 17-yard run.

Two of Brown’s touchdown passes went to Bridger Waters, with the other two going to Jalen Estep and Nate Renfrew. Waters totaled 73 receiving yards and two touchdowns on four grabs in the first half.

But the Demons’ defense forced two more turnovers early in the third quarter, as Diego Arias recovered a fumble and Mayberry intercepted a Brown pass.

“It’s huge, getting momentum in that big of a shift. Those turnovers helped us a lot,” DHS head coach David Vogt said.

A 20-yard field goal by Cole Gustavson gave the Demons a two-score lead at 37-29, and another turnover on downs by Air Academy set the Demons up for another touchdown score. Mayberry rushed for 36 yards on the Demons’ scoring drive, which was capped by a 9-yard Mayberry touchdown run. That score made it 44-28 Demons with 3 minutes, 48 seconds to play in the third quarter.

Gustavson finished it off with a 21-yard field goal to make it a two-score game again after a touchdown pass from Air Academy’s Cale Powers to Carmine Naccarelli made it 44-36 late in the fourth.

The Demons clinched the game when Mayberry deflected a Kadets’ fourth-and-goal pass with 2 minutes to play.

“To get that feeling of that ball on my fingertips, it was nice,” said Mayberry, son of George and Tonya Mayberry. “I knew it wasn’t going to get to the receiver.”

Durango will finish its season next week at Rampart (6-2, 3-0 PPL).

“It’s my last game, you know, I gotta leave it all on the field,” Spies said. “It’s going to be tough, but we gotta step up.”
