Schirard, deputies helped restore peace

I was a victim of domestic violence from 2007-2009. In December 2009, the last episode of violence occurred, and I called 911.

The sheriff’s deputies were here immediately. My husband was later arrested and jailed for 24 hours then released with a mandatory restraining order – yet proceeded to show up at home, cut my phone wires and chase me to my car.

Fortunately, my son showed up, and we drove to where there was cell service, and I called 911. The Sheriff’s Office responded with six or seven deputies. After several days on the run, my husband turned himself in. He made a plea bargain and then spent three months in jail. Shortly after he was released in March 2010, the alarm system, which I had beefed up over the course of his absence, began going off regularly for unexplained reasons for the next several years. The Sheriff’s Office continued to respond quickly and respectfully each time they were called by dispatch.

It is stated on the La Plata County website: “The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office is the front line provider of emergency peacekeeping and criminal investigation services for over 50,000 citizens of La Plata County.” I know, as a resident of La Plata County, that through the leadership of Duke Schirard, peace slowly returned to my chaotic world. I feel peace of mind, living in my own home and knowing that Duke Schirard is at the helm of the Sheriff’s Department.

I am thankful that he has, once again, decided to run for sheriff of La Plata County, and he has my support – and especially my thanks to him and his deputies for a job well done!
