False bomb threats at FLC

City and campus cops investigate source
Two bomb threats were made early Saturday at the Charles Dale Rea Memorial Clock Tower at Fort Lewis College.

Fort Lewis College and Durango Police Department are investigating two bomb threats that came in by phone about 20 minutes apart on Saturday morning, warning that a bomb was in or near the FLC clock tower.

According to a report by FLC spokesman Mitch Davis, shortly after 5:20 a.m. campus police received a call saying a bomb was actually inside the college’s iconic clock tower at the epicenter of the school grounds. Officials searched the tower and found nothing.

Then, at about 5:40 a.m., a second call came in claiming the bomb was in trash container near the clock tower. Again, campus police searched the area and found nothing.

The entire area was secured, Davis said, after both calls, confirming that no one was in harm’s way.

Officials believe that the calls came from the same person and are investigating a phone number that may be associated with the false claims.

Davis said in an email that in his eight years with Fort Lewis College, there have been only two such incidents. He called bomb threats rare on the campus.
