15th Street road work begins

Monthlong project will smooth out intersection
Contractors working for the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad were busy replacing 120 feet of track Wednesday afternoon at 15th Street. Head mechanic Troy Lass of D&SNG said new ballast, ties and tracks, as well as new wiring and improved drainage, will keep excess water from setting off the traffic signal. Lass said the project will make for a smoother road for drivers.

The monthlong closure at East Second Avenue and 15th Street will produce something for everyone, says Amber Blake, multi-modal coordinator for the city of Durango.

The city held 75 meetings in 2010 and 2011 on a multi-model transportation master plan, Blake said. The intersection came up every time, she said.

Vehicles won’t go bump-bump when crossing the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad tracks, Blake said. New ties will be installed in a section of track to make crossing as smooth as it is at the post office downtown, she said.

Missing sections of sidewalk will be replaced, storm drains will be improved, needed signs will installed and bicycle-lane markings will be painted, Blake said.

A transfer point accessible to people with disabilities will be installed for riders of Route 1, the trolley and Route 4, the Fort Lewis College bus.

The work, which started Monday, is expected to be done around Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, motorists and bicyclists should find alternate routes.

Durango received a grant from the Federal Transit Authority for the $503,000 project, Blake said. The city will put up $100,000 of the cost.

Local companies are doing the work, Blake said. Goff Engineering did the design and Kennebec Construction is doing the work.
