LPEA warns of scam

A new series of scam calls about La Plata Electric Association cutting off power because of delinquent bills is targeting hotels and motels.

At least four hotels and motels alerted LPEA’s dispatcher Tuesday that service would be disconnected if a bill wasn’t settled.

Don’t be fooled, LPEA spokeswoman Indiana Reed said Wednesday.

When an account is past due, LPEA customers receive a series of notices and are given adequate time to settle their bills before power is cut off, Reed said.

If there is any doubt, call LPEA at 247-5786 to clarify billing questions, Reed said.

If a call is obviously fraudulent, contact the authorities, Reed said.

The scam calls targeting hotels and motels follow similar assaults on LPEA customers in general that began earlier this year, Reed said.
