Treasurer is nonpartisan, functional

Some elected offices are easier to vote than others. Party affiliation may be all it takes to determine one’s decision. Others, however, require a more thoughtful approach, relying on the best qualifications for a specific position. County treasurer falls into the latter category.

Allison Morrissey provides the better choice when all factors are considered. Voters are fortunate to have two candidates with different backgrounds. Bobby Lieb has served as county commissioner since 2010 and has a long history as a private businessman in La Plata County. He could have been re-elected to serve as commissioner, continuing to work effectively with all county departments, had he not decided to make a career move to a position without term limits.

However, the position of county treasurer is non-partisan and functional. Past associations with individuals and departments are not necessarily a benefit and could lead to entrenchment of past policies. Morrissey is no newcomer to La Plata County, but she brings a wealth of financial and management experience from her work in the private sector. No doubt that is one reason several local conservatives support her.

Beyond her educational background and direct experience with technology, business, and banking, she currently serves on local nonprofit boards with diverse positive impacts on quality of life in the county. Allison Morrissey will bring a fresh, trustworthy perspective to meet the challenges of a changing local economy requiring difficult, demanding and independent decisions.
