Halloween festivities have kids’, adults’ attention in Durango

Break out the wigs, face paint and crazy costumes. It’s Halloween once again, with many events going on at various locations throughout town. However, it’s important to remember to be safe, first and foremost.

According to the National Safety Council, falling down is the No. 1 cause of injuries that children incur on Halloween.

Children also are four times as likely to be hit and killed by a car on Halloween, said Dawne Gardener, injury-prevention coordinator at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, in an interview with Colorado News Connection.

Durango Police Lt. Ray Shupe said parents should give their children glow sticks or flashlights to help drivers see children crossing the street, and drivers must be cautious when driving in congested areas.

“It’s really important for everyone to pay attention,” Shupe said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also said costumes need to fit properly to prevent falls and to allow maximum visibility for walking children. Parents should also check all candy before it is eaten to ensure it hasn’t been tampered with.
