Subway near Walmart robbed at gunpoint

Police say suspect escaped on foot with $300

A man robbed the Subway on South Camino del Rio Wednesday evening after threatening the employees with a semi-automatic pistol, according to a police statement.

The red-haired man in his early 20s stole $300 from the store around 10 p.m.

The man entered the store while two female employees were getting ready to close.

He went straight into the bathroom, and when he came out he stared at the employees for a short time. Then he pulled a small, black semi-automatic pistol from his jacket, the statement said.

He told both employees to put their hands in the air and told them to follow his instructions, so the robbery didn’t turn into a murder.

Then he told one of the employees to empty the cash register and tip jar into a bag. He took the bag and left the store on foot.

After he left, one employee set off a panic alarm while the other called 911. Neither one was hurt, the statement said.

Officers arrived shortly after, but they were unable to locate the suspect. The police are looking for a man in his early 20s with short red hair and no facial hair. He was wearing jeans, a green jacket and dark athletic shoes.

Detectives from the Durango Police Department are trying to obtain video footage of the robbery suspect from Walmart and from Subway. Once video footage is available, it will be posted on the city of Durango website, www.durangogov.org/crimestoppers, and on www.facebook.com/cityofdurango.

Anyone with information can call Detective Brad Roach at 375-4738. Or if you would like to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 247-1112.

The suspect is considered armed and extremely dangerous. Please, do not approach or confront him on your own.
