Rampart Rams end the DHS football season

A late first-half touchdown pass from Terrence Trujillo to Justin Marcum looked like it would give Durango all the momentum it needed.

It wasn’t to be, though, as the Durango High School football team couldn’t finish a rally in the second half at Rampart in the final game of the season. A fourth-quarter score gave the Rams a 10-point lead, and Rampart (7-3, 4-1 Pikes Peak League) held on to secure a 31-21 win against the Durango Demons (4-6, 2-3 PPL) on Friday night in Colorado Springs.

Trailing 24-7 late in the first half, the Demons struck for two touchdowns on passes by Trujillo. The first was a 9-yard pass to Jalon Malone, and the next was the big connection to Marcum with just 24 seconds to go in the half. The two scores cut the deficit to just 24-21, but Durango couldn’t get anything going in the third quarter to take a lead.

The Demons had the initial lead in the game, going up on a 1-yard touchdown run by Lawrence Mayberry.

But Rampart stormed into the endzone on a 56-yard run by Tyler Prejean to even the game at 7.

Rampart took the lead on a 24-yard field goal, and Rampart quarterback Parker Humphrey connected with Noah Taylor on a touchdown pass on the Rams’ next drive to establish a 17-7 advantage for the home team.

Trujillo was intercepted on the Demons’ next drive, and Taylor made the Demons pay with a 17-yard touchdown run to give Rampart a 24-7 lead.

Neither team could get anything going offensively in the third quarter, but Rampart scored again early in the fourth on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Humphrey to Carl Otero.

After DHS went down 31-21, the Demons tried a long pass to get back in the game, but Trujillo was intercepted again, and Rampart was able to run down the the final 4 minutes, 10 seconds off the clock.

Trujillo was intercepted three times in the game and threw two touchdowns.

DHS finished 2-3 in its new Pikes Peak League. Two weeks ago, DHS head coach David Vogt said the team struggled with the long travel trips to the Front Range for league games, but he said he enjoyed the increased level of competition in the new league that is led by No. 1 and defending state champion Pine Creek (9-0, 4-0 PPL.)

“It’s a great challenge for us, and we will be competing for the title next year,” Vogt said Friday night in a text message to The Durango Herald.

The Demons will lose 15 seniors from this year’s team and will return Trujillo to quarterback. A class of 20 juniors will return to the team as seniors next season.

“Our young players are hungry,” Vogt said. “I told the kids this is a process, and it will take time. We need everyone to buy in 100 percent to the goal, and that is to compete for a state championship every year.”
