FLC gets bullied by BYU Cougars

’Hawks learn a valuable lesson in exhibition

If the Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team was looking for a challenging exhibition to open the season, it found it.

The FLC Skyhawks played their first game of 2014-15 with an exhibition at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. FLC fell 79-43 in the game, but the experience of playing the Cougars was all head coach Jason Flores was looking for.

“We scheduled this knowing they would be really good. BYU is a Sweet 16 team last year in Division I, and we knew it would get our team better for our season,” Flores said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “We definitely were rusty.”

FLC shot just 1-of-15 from behind the 3-point line and 12-of-22 from the free-throw line.

“Those are things we know we are better than that. It will come back around,” Flores said.

FLC was without starting junior forward Mary Brinton of Pagosa Springs, a preseason Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference all-conference player, as well as redshirt freshman guard Kelsey Wainwright.

Ande Lampert, a sophomore forward, led FLC with 13 points, and junior guard Kylie Santos had 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting for FLC. Santos also added four rebounds, and senior forward Kaile Magazzeni led the Skyhawks with seven rebounds.

FLC was happy to have Simone Ruedin, a junior transfer from New Mexico State by way of Australia, back in the lineup Saturday. Ruedin had missed the last three weeks of practice with an injury.

“She was a bit out of rhythm, but that is to be expected her first week back,” Flores said. “To transfer in and miss three weeks leading up to this game and preseason makes it different when trying to learn everything.”

BYU hit 9-of-17 3-point buckets, and Lexi Eaton scored a game-high 14 points.

FLC will open the regular season at 4 p.m. Friday against University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. The Skyhawks will stay in Texas a second night to play St. Edward’s at 5 p.m. Saturday in Austin, Texas.

“We got a great learning experience against a good team, and I think we know what we need to work on going into next week,” Flores said.
