Shooting probe continues

Police have interviewed groups
Durango police Sgt. Bobby Taylor, left, and EMS supervisor Dave Fiddler, with the Durango Fire Protection District, talk to a man on Tuesday evening at the Exxon at East Animas Road and Florida Road after a shooting took place in the Riverbend neighborhood. Benjamin Jacob Keil, 19, was shot in the hip, and a group that was with Keil stopped at the gasoline station to call 911 to report the incident.

The investigation continues into the shooting of 19-year-old Benjamin Jacob Keil on Tuesday night.

“We found the car that left the scene,” said Lt. Ray Shupe from the Durango Police Department. “We’ve identified everybody in that vehicle; we’re not looking for anybody else.”

The shooting occurred about 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Riverbend neighborhood north of 32nd Street off East Third Avenue. Two groups of people were involved, Shupe said, but it’s too early to talk about motive, suspects or other circumstances. A bullet recovered at the scene is being analyzed.

“We’ve interviewed everyone involved,” he said, “but we’re still putting the pieces together.”

Shupe is anticipating an arrest early next week depending on how the case comes together.

“There are a lot of sides to the story with all these witnesses,” Shupe said.
