Expect snow today in mountains

Against a backdrop of fresh snow, Joey Alvarez, a senior business economics major at Fort Lewis College, has chilly job of recording the football game between the Skyhawks and the Chadron State College Eagles on Saturday afternoon at FLC.

Just like that, winter showed up. Almost 2 feet of snow fell near Silverton on Friday, and area mountain passes got their fair share.

Coal Bank Pass received 21 inches, Molas 16.5 inches and Red Mountain a reported 12.

Weather officials are calling it a potent winter storm. John Kyle, with the National Weather Service, said more was on the way Saturday night.

“We’re expecting six to 10 inches pretty easily for the San Juans before it tapers off,” he said. “There are some good snowfall totals we’ve seen. A couple of feet is not uncommon.”

Today should be mostly sunny with highs around 34.

Wolf Creek Ski Area reported 8 inches of new snow Saturday – with more falling, making for good powder conditions as it reopens for the weekend with a growing 24-inch base.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center has issued a special avalanche advisory, as the abrupt transition into winter could see dangerous nature- and human-triggered avalanche activity.
