Christmas tree permits on sale

David Crawford, a National Forest Service forester, tags a white fur he cut as a Christmas tree within the Beaver Meadows area east of Bayfield in November 2012.

Christmas tree permits, which allows people to cut their own tree on federal land, are on sale at federal land offices and some private businesses.

A permit, which costs $8, allows the cutting of one tree, of up to 20 feet, for personal use. The permits expire Dec. 31.

Permits come with a brochure that explains regulations and offers tips. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management offices sell maps for tree harvesting.

Federal land offices in Durango, Bayfield, Dolores and Pagosa Springs are open from 8 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. Monday through Friday during the holidays.

Permits also are on sale at City Market in Cortez, Dolores Food Market in Dolores, Kroeger’s Ace Hardware in Durango and Cox Conoco in Mancos.

Permits are not on sale at the Anasazi Heritage Center.
