Cops to take kids shopping; fundraising underway

Adrian Beltram hunts for a video game while wearing Bureau of Indian Affairs officer Lyle Benally’s hat. BIA officers Kurt Holman and Benally are in back watching during the Shop With A Cop program.

Youngsters, rejoice: “Shop with a Cop” is back.

On Dec. 17, local law enforcement officers are going to take 100 kids shopping.

The event, which is organized by the Fraternal Order of Police Durango Lodge No. 8, is raising money to fund the Christmas expedition.

“One hundred percent of the money that is raised will go to the children. There will be no administrative costs taken out,” said Durango Police Department Sgt. Geary Parsons in a letter announcing the event.

The plan is to raise $125 per child, “so they can purchase needed clothing and some toys,” he said.

Donations will be accepted through the mail, not by phone.

If you want to make a donation, send the check to:

In his letter, Parsons writes that the program is hugely successful, and concludes by saying: “We cannot have this program without your support.”
