FLC celebrates international students

College groups to present ‘Dear Father, Don’t Worry’

When people think about Fort Lewis College, one of the first things that comes to mind is a student body that is 25 percent Native American, including tribes from across the country.

But what they may not know is that FLC is even more diverse, hosting students from 15 countries. To celebrate International Education Week, three organizations associated with the college – the International Student Office, Professional Associates and Theatre Department – are presenting “Dear Father, Don’t Worry” on Wednesday.

Featuring the letters of a man who might arguably be called Southwest Colorado’s first exchange student, Gustaf Nordenskiöld, it’s a reading by student Daniel Barkenas from Sweden and FLC theater student Matt Socci, with narration by Judith Reynolds and Theatre Department Chairman Dennis Elkins.

Nordenskiöld was a young Swedish scientist who conducted some of the first archaeological surveys of Mesa Verde National Park.

Durango Herald columnist and arts critic Reynolds and her late husband, David, wrote a biography about Nordenskiöld and were granted access to his family’s private papers for their research. The letters, relating a run-in with locals over archaeological artifacts that eventually led to State Department intercession, were part of the papers.

The performance will take place at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Roshong Hall in Jones Hall at FLC. Admission is free.
