Gering again runs to nationals

Gering and Kruger earn all-region for FLC cross country

Christian Gering is the last Skyhawk standing.

Gering will be the lone Skyhawk representing the Fort Lewis College cross country team at nationals for the second consecutive year. He finished 15th in the men’s 10-kilometer race at the 2014 NCAA Division II South Central Region Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Washington Park in Denver, completing the course in 32 minutes, 54 seconds.

The top six men’s and women’s teams and top three individuals qualified for nationals, which will take place Dec. 6 in Lousiville, Kentucky.

Adams State won both the men’s and women’s individual and team regional championships.

The Skyhawks finished eighth as a men’s team and ninth on the women’s side.

The Grizzlies’ Kevin Batt edged teammate and defending national champion Tabor Stevens for the men’s title, though they both finished at 31:45.

Maura O’Brien took the women’s 6K championship for Adams State in 22:15.

William Scoggins was the Skyhawks’ second men’s runner, finishing 59th in 34:42, Joey Brenner took 63rd in 34:50, Tate Lagasca finished 64th in 34:51, Ryan Mott was 67th in 35:01 and Michael Walker took 78th in 35:22.

Maddie Kruger crossed the line first for the Skyhawks’ women’s team in 17th at 23:31. Katherine Judge followed for FLC in 35th at 24:09, Emily Bryant took 44th in 24:27, Kristen Ascencio was 61st in 24:52, Emily White finished 80th in 25:21, Kelsi Lawrence took 85th in 25:37, and Durango High School alumna Madeigh Winsor was 89th in 25:46.

Gering and Kruger were named All-Central Region after finishing in the top 25.
