Bidding for head of dinosaur soars

Silent auction ends at 5 p.m. Wednesday
Minna Jain, co-owner of Studio &, holds the dinosaur head that was placed on the Arc of History sculpture during Halloween at the intersection of South Camino del Rio and U.S. Highway 160. The head was stolen, recovered by police and now has been donated to Studio & to be auctioned. The high bid Monday stood at $1,000.

This weekend, bidding on the dinosaur head soared to $1,000.

Studio & said an anonymous donor placed the highest bid on Saturday. The silent auction will close at 5 p.m. sharp on Wednesday. Proceeds will go to fund art education at the Durango Arts Center.

The city of Durango has so far not placed a bid, said Studio &’s Tim Kapustka.

But many people who have come in to inquire about bidding keep asking whether or not they can return the dinosaur head to its illegal perch atop the Arc of History.

Kapustka said Studio & was thrilled with the bidding, as the DAC gets no public funding.

His advice to anyone who seriously wants to own the dinosaur head was to be there before the bidding closes.

Many people who have toyed with the idea of placing a bid, he said, have asked whether Studio & could ensure their anonymity, with some inquiring how the sculpture might hold up outside.

Kapustka said he was not surprised that someone was willing to spend $1,000 on the dinosaur head.

“In Durango, this is pop-culture history. People are just intrigued by it,” he said.
