Skyhawks add five for 2015-16 season

FLC women’s basketball adds the SWL Player of the Year

Three games into their 2014-15 regular season, the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks announced a handful of future recruits to assist the women’s basketball program next winter.

“We are excited about the versatility that this class will add to our team,” FLC head coach Jason Flores said in a news release to The Durango Herald. “They bring such great individual qualities but fit together nicely in the big scheme of things. All of them are coming from teams that competed in or won state championships, so they understand the sacrifices it takes to be successful.”

The recruits are Sydni Brandon, Kayla Herrera, Payton Shahan, Delaney Sain and Alyssa Yocky.

Brandon, a 5-7 guard from Grand Junction High School, is the reigning Southwestern League Player of the Year.

“Sydni is a very quick and athletic point guard,” Flores said. “She can be a tremendous defensive player, and offensively she can get inside the paint at will. Watching her over the past couple of summers, she loved setting her teammates up for easy scores, which is such a great attribute.”

Herrera, a 5-9 guard from Santa Fe, helped the Santa Fe Demons to a state title.

“She is a ‘glue player,’ meaning she does whatever is necessary for her team to win. Her team won a state championship last year, so she understands what winning is all about.”

Shahan is a 5-11 guard/forward from Pagosa Springs.

“Payton is a very athletic wing player who really has a chance to develop,” Flores said. “Her aggressiveness and athleticism will be two great attributes to our team early on in her career. We love the fact that we are able to keep her close to home.”

Sain is a 6-foot forward from Argyle, Texas, where she was named the District 10-3A Offensive Player of the Year.

“Delaney has a great combination of strength and skill,” Flores said. “As she develops, she will be a real tough matchup for a lot of people.”

Yocky is a 6-foot forward from La Cueva High School in Albuquerque.

“We are really excited about Alyssa’s potential,” Flores said. “She is a forward who will be able to develop into a true inside/outside threat with good athleticism. She comes from one of the best high school programs in the state of New Mexico and is accustomed to winning games.”

FLC is 2-1 to start this season, and the Skyhawks will play Eastern New Mexico at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Portales, N.M.
