Three Demons make 2nd team

A pair of seniors and a surging sophomore cracked the all-league softball team for the Durango Demons.

Durango High School seniors Katelyn DeLuche and Paige Mazur, along with sophomore Rebekah Ford, were named to the All-Southwestern League softball second team.

DeLuche led the Demons and the entire SWL in runs batted in with 37, and she hit for a .492 average in 69 plate appearances. She had six doubles, one triple and one home run.

“She was our offensive leader all year. I fought hard for her to be on the first team, but we couldn’t get her enough votes there,” DHS first-year head coach Chelsea Rodriguez said. “She is such a clutch player, and she got us a hit every time we needed it.”

Mazur hit for a .414 average and scored 29 times in the leadoff spot. She had 12 RBI, three doubles, two triples and a pair of homers.

“She showed so much improvement and growth this year. She shined as a leader on and off the field,” Rodriguez said of Mazur. “She secured the No. 1 spot in our batting order halfway through the season, and I could count on her to get a hit and get on base. She earned a spot on the all-conference team with the passion she played with all year.”

Ford finished second on the team with a .458 batting average, and she added 24 runs scored, 21 RBI, seven doubles and two triples at the plate.

“I knew she would be an all-conference contender from the very beginning with how skilled she is and how hard she works,” Rodriguez said of Ford. “She did a lot as a sophomore, and to succeed at a high level says a lot about her character and ability. She’s an awesome player.”

Grand Junction Central’s Tyler Hays was named the player of the year, and Central head coach Scott Else was named the coach of the year. The Warriors went 18-5 and 6-0 in the SWL, and Hays hit seven home runs and six doubles to go with 30 RBI and 26 runs scored. The senior finished with a .438 batting average.

The Demons finished the season 8-11 and 2-8 in the SWL. Along with Ford, DHS will return seven other players from this year’s varsity team next season.
