FLC term wraps up with blizzard of art activity

Blaylock

The Fort Lewis College Jazz Ensemble performs tonight, beginning a blizzard of art and music as we wrap up the term with several holiday events.

Two graduating seniors have recitals this month. Violinist Ashley Markle will perform tomorrow, and clarinetist Martha McCabe will perform Dec. 12 – both at 7 p.m. in Roshong Recital Hall and free of charge.

Come on up to the FLC Art Gallery this week to view “CTRL + Create,” the art majors’ capstone exhibition. Comprised of some amazing work from art majors within the graphic-design and art-education options, the exhibit will open with a reception from 4:30-6 p.m. Wednesday and will remain up through Dec. 19.

On Thursday, the Percussion Ensemble will perform both standard and contemporary works, including Casey Cangelosi’s “Metavita” – a piece for three snare drums, performed in the dark with lights attached to the musicians’ sticks.

For over 25 years, FLC has held its annual Holiday Concert every first Friday in December in the Concert Hall. This year at 7 p.m, the band will play a lively selection of fun tunes and is pleased to be collaborating with Dori Smith, visiting instructor of voice, in a beautiful performance of “O Holy Night.” The choirs will entertain audiences with a mix of sacred, traditional and rousingly delightful tunes. The grand finale will feature all of the musicians – including the chamber orchestra – on stage. Join us for our great family tradition of holiday music sure to put people in the spirit.

Roshong Recital Hall is the place to be Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. for a free recital given by the Music Department’s small instrumental ensembles. We’ll have clarinets, brass, saxophones and strings on tap to entertain.

As has become tradition at the Community Concert Hall, the magical holiday ballet “Nutcracker,” performed by the highly-acclaimed State Street Ballet of Santa Barbara, California, will usher in the holidays with two matinees and two evening performances on Dec. 12-14. Artistic Director Rodney Gustafson holds true to the original classical ballet in this Tchaikovsky masterpiece, creating a traditional “Nutcracker” set in Victorian times and suited for all ages.

Durango’s much-beloved cowboy crooners will come off the Bar D and return to the Community Concert Hall stage for their traditional cowboy Christmas show Dec. 18. Founded by Cy Scarborough in 1969, the Bar D Wranglers offer a unique mix of Western music, cowboy poetry and humor. The Christmas Jubilee is a warm-hearted and fun-filled show that inspires the entire family to remember the true meaning of the holidays.

We at the FLC appreciate your support and love seeing you at our events.

Tickets for Concert Hall, Theatre Department and Music Department performances can be purchased at the Durango Welcome Center, 802 Main Ave., at www.durangoconcerts.com or by calling (970) 247-7657.
