Local trial starts in sex-assault case

Loveday

The trial for a man facing several charges of sexual assault started Monday in the 6th Judicial District Court.

Harold Loveday is accused of sexually assaulting three victims over the course of ten years.

The crimes are alleged to have begun in 2000 and ended in 2010. He was arrested Aug. 17, 2012, and he is still in the La Plata County jail, said Assistant District Attorney Christian Champagne.

Defense attorney Daniel Shaffer said the jury should be prepared for emotional testimony.

“The content of the testimony I expect you to hear is difficult,” he said.

“We’re being very cautious here,” Judge William Herringer said.

The first day of a scheduled seven-day trial involving jury selection lasted until 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Loveday is charged with sexually assaulting a child while in a position of trust and one charge of incest, involving one victim. He also faces two charges of sexual assault involving two victims younger than 15, Champagne said.
