From unheralded hero to star

Zeke, a standard schnauzer, waits to visit a patient at the Durango Cancer Center in July. Zeke has filmed a commercial with his owner, Gay Robson, for Centura Health, Mercy Regional Medical Center’s parent organization, to begin airing in February.

For three years, Zeke quietly did his work as a therapy dog at the Durango Cancer Center, bringing comfort to patients and health-care workers alike.

In July, his work made front page news in The Durango Herald, and now Centura Health has tapped him to star in his own commercial.

Scheduled to begin running in February, a longer version of the commercial is running now on YouTube as “Zeke’s Story.”

The commercial also feature’s Zeke’s owner, Gay Robson; her husband, Ted, who as a cancer patient found solace in therapy dogs; Durango Cancer Center clinical manager Emmy Unterreiner; and Gail Gardner, who trains canines to be therapy dogs.
