New York Times reviews book on weeds

Durango forager, teacher and author Katrina Blair has published a book, The Wild Wisdom of Weeds.

Having a book mentioned by The New York Times would be triumph enough for most authors. Getting a positive review in the Times’ Sunday Book Review? Total victory.

That’s what happened to Durango forager and educator Katrina Blair on Sunday, when Dominique Browning reviewed her new book The Wild Wisdom of Weeds in a piece on gardening books.

Browning called Blair’s new book “charming and intelligent” and credited the author for her personal efforts to create chemical-free parks in Durango.

In Wild Wisdom, Blair spotlights 13 beneficial, edible weeds that are found in human-disturbance zones all over the world. The book highlights their medicinal and nutritional qualities, gives tips on harvesting them and offers more than 100 recipes for incorporating them into a diet. Blair hopes that the book can inspire better land stewardship and connection with the natural world.

Blair said she was thrilled to hear about the Times piece.

“I was very honored,” she said. “It’s a big blessing.”
