Project Merry Christmas needs more donations

Project Merry Christmas still is looking for donations of toys, food, clothing and cash to help make the holiday season a little brighter for needy families in La Plata County.

For people looking to spread a little cheer this holiday season, Project Merry Christmas is looking for more donations.

On Saturday, there will be a breakfast with Santa at McDonald’s from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., as well as a blanket drive at La Plata Electric Association from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“It’s crunch time,” said Project Merry Christmas Vice President, Cathy Crum. “We want to provide a better holiday for people who need a little help.”

Families in financial need with eighth-graders or younger children, senior citizens older than 65 and handicapped individuals who qualify with Human Services can participate.

Sunday will be the end of the Angel Tree, where shoppers at the Durango Mall select a name and buy the requested clothing items. The purchased clothes then are turned into the Project Merry Christmas gift-wrapping booth to be given to the children.

So far, donations have been good this year, Crum said. Toys, clothes, food and monetary donations have been coming in from local businesses, schools and private citizens. Volunteers also have been a huge part of the success of Project Merry Christmas.

“Everyone steps up,” Crum said. “Lots of people in the community enjoy giving.”

This year, nearly 500 families have been helped through the effort. Last year, about 530 families were helped.

“We couldn’t do it without the generosity of the community,” Crum said. “This wouldn’t happen without them.”

Donations can be dropped off at the group’s booth at the Durango Mall. For more inforamtion and for volunteer opportunities, call 247-2944.
