Skyhawks enter their inaugural indoor season

Two unknown teams enter the 2014-15 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women’s indoor track and field season.

Fort Lewis College begins its inaugural season of indoor track and field led by head coach Mark Dutro. The Skyhawks are one of two new programs, along with South Dakota Mines.

In a preseason coaches poll released Tuesday, FLC received were selected to finish 11th out of 12 teams in the conference with 18 points. South Dakota Mines, which has supported women’s indoor track and field and enters its first year in the RMAC, was picked to finish last with 17 points.

FLC held open tryouts for the team, and 13 runners are listed on the current roster.

Adams State was picked to finish first in both the men’s and women’s track and field polls. The Grizzlies’ men’s team has won three consecutive conference titles, and the women’s team has won 13 in a row.

The Grizzlies’ Kevin Batt was named the men’s Preseason Athlete of the Year, and New Mexico Highlands’ Salcia Slack earned the honor for the women.

The first women’s meet of the year will be the Western State Opener on Jan. 16 in Gunnison.
