Snow gods bless Silverton

Silverton comes to life this weekend as its two ski areas – one in town, one just up the road – open for the season.

Silverton Mountain, a favorite among those nationally and internationally looking to get off the beaten path, will open Saturday.

“Conditions are great. It’s snowing right now,” Jen Brill, spokeswoman, said Thursday afternoon.

For the next three weekends, lift tickets for unguided skiing are $49. With a guide it’s $99. Beginning Jan. 9, only unguided skiing is available, and the daily ticket is $139.

Silverton Mountain, located just a few miles from Silverton up Cement Creek along County Road 110, reported a mid-mountain base Thursday morning of 40 inches, with 11 new in the last three days.

“The other great thing is we don’t have Christmas crowds, if you want a place to go to get away from the Christmas mayhem,” Brill said.

The area’s Jan. 4 Clauson Classic, named in honor of John Clauson, the mountain’s former snow safety assistant who died of leukemia, has been revamped, Brill said. It’s now an endurance event with prizes for, among other things, amount of vertical skied and hiked.

Kendall Mountain

The town of Silverton’s Kendall Mountain Recreation Area, which has four runs and a 240-foot drop, opens for skiing and snowboarding on Friday.

Lift tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for ages 6-17, free for 5 and younger and $10 for ages 65-plus.

Kendall Mountain’s lift runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays through Sundays.
