San Juan Health right to rid feral cats

As a former environmental-health specialist at San Juan Basin Health Department for nearly 18 years, I am compelled to respond to Rita Fowler (Letters, Herald, Dec. 14.)

SJBHD is filthy! It is run down, permeated with dog hair and in dire need of repairs. It is a public-health disgrace. I cannot speak of the new managers or to their lack of caring and values, however, I am 100 percent in favor with their decision to rid SJBHD of feral cats. They should not be allowed to be on the premises.

Feral cats carry diseases, defecate everywhere, eat and attract rodents, and annihilate the already stressed songbird population. I am appalled this was allowed to continue for 12 years. It is a public-health menace and should not be tolerated, even if Fowler believes it was not the kind thing to do.

The Board of Health should definitely support the administration and its correct solution to this public-health issue.
