Six still grappling for BHS

Beebe, McMenimen undefeated at Moon Valley

After five rounds of wrestling in a 31-team tournament, six Bayfield High School wrestlers still are alive for a podium spot at the Moon Valley Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona, after Friday’s matches.

“We had a good day (Friday). We’ve got some eligibility and injury issues that are holding a few out yet,” BHS head coach Todd McMenimen said. “We showed up ready to wrestle. I feel like our team grew up a bit this week. We’re certainly maturing as individuals and as a team.”

Garret Beebe and Colter McMenimen went undefeated across five matches at 106 pounds and 145 pounds, respectively.

Three Wolverines got through with only one loss – Jake Sandrey at 113 pounds, Taylor Winch at 132 pounds and Blane Barnes at 195 pounds. Sam Westbrook went 3-2 on the day at heavyweight.

Cash Snooks and Cody Speece both went 2-3, which would make it difficult to qualify out of pool play.

“Even those guys that had multiple losses, we’re wrestling top-quality competition. We’re losing matches to really good kids,” coach McMenimen said. “The type of wrestling we’re doing is right there. We’re in the matches to the end – one or two things from pulling out victories. I’m real pleased with the effort we put in.”

All competitors will wrestle two more matches Saturday to complete pool play before the top two from each eight-man poll are seeded in an elimination bracket for podium position.
