Eagles edge Demon boys late

Leading by seven points with 5 minutes to play, the Durango Demons couldn’t hold off a challenge in hostile territory.

Pueblo East (5-5) came from behind to beat the Durango High School boys basketball team 38-33 on Friday night in the second round of Pueblo East’s Coaches Classic tournament.

“They got some key turnovers – we turned it over three of four possessions – and they got layups and and-ones,” DHS head coach Alan Batiste said of the Pueblo East Eagles. “They went up by one with 2:40 to go, and we had to foul from there.”

The Demons (2-4) were led by junior Lucas Baken’s 13 points.

Even with the loss, Batiste was much more encouraged by his team’s performance than he was a week ago at a tournament at Ponderosa High School in Parker.

“We’re right in the place we need to be as far as Durango basketball. We’re finally back to that point,” he said. “Our chemistry is coming along, and we’re playing more disciplined and patient on offense. It’s coming together.”

DHS will play Mead (5-2) at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the final round of the tournament.

“We have some things to work on and apply against Mead. They’re a top-five team in the state,” Batiste said.
