BHS locks down San Juan

Five Wolverines hit double figures in win

Any defensive issues the Bayfield High School boys basketball team experienced against Mancos evaporated as soon as the Wolverines crossed the state line.

BHS held San Juan (Blanding, Utah) to three points in the first quarter in a 73-58 victory Saturday in Blanding.

The Wolverines led 40-28 at halftime. They shot 45 percent from the field and only turned the ball over 12 times in their first true road game.

Junior Zane Phelps led BHS with 17 points and 11 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. Four other Wolverines scored in double figures.

Senior Taed Heydinger had 14 points and three 3-pointers, senior Preston hardy scored 12 points, and Trevor Gabbard and Dillon Hoselton both had 10.

BHS (4-1) is off to its best start since 2010, when it also started 4-1.

The Wolverines next will play Miyamura at 7 p.m. Jan. 6 in Bayfield.
