DHS students win business contest

Durango High School students won the award for advanced proficiency at the Western Slope DECA competition in Glenwood Springs earlier this month.

DECA is a national organization that prepares students at high school and college levels for leadership in business, finance and entrepreneurial endeavors.

DECA stands for Delta Epsilon Chi and Distributive Education Clubs of America.

Fourteen DHS students participated, with five winning individual specialties. The overall triumph was earned by averaging all role play and examination scores.

Individual winners were Joaquin Valdez, Charles McClung, Jenna Engelken, Paxton Scott and Violet Witchel. They advance to DECA state competition, scheduled for Feb. 21-24 in Colorado Springs.

Jenna, Violet and Paxton were double qualifiers, in role play and written work.

The other members of the DHS team were Joe Genualdi, Clay Mickelson, Abby Scott, Mason Stetler, Jared Webster, SheaLynn Baca, Chris Blevins, Madeleine Dearien and Tanus Yoder.
