Mesa Verde plans Chapin Mesa prescribed burn for Jan. 5

Spruce Tree House glows as it is lit up for the annual Mesa Verde luminaria night.

Mesa Verde National Park is planning a prescribed burn on Chapin Mesa the week of Jan. 5.

The project, covering two acres, will dispose of Gambel juniper, oak and piñon trimmed during the summer.

Burning is scheduled for two days, but smoke may linger for several days.

The park will remain open during the winter, although some hikes and services will be limited.

Guide booklets are available at the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum and at sites along the Mesa Top Loop Road. Limited food service is available at the Spruce Tree Terrace, near the museum, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There is no overnight lodging in the park.

Spruce Tree House is the only cliff dwelling open during the winter. Ranger-guide tours are offered daily at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
